1958 collects the photographs of an 11-year-old Francis Van Maele, who used his Kodak Brownie to document the license plates of various foreign cars in the parking lots of the Brussels' World Exhibition, in Knock-Le Zoute, in Bruges, and in his nearby hometown of Tielt. The composition of each photograph (made from recently unearthed negatives) remains consistent throughout the book; the majority of every frame is occupied by the back end of the car, while the architecture and landscapes in the background blend into a vignette. Each sepia-tinted photograph is labeled in handwritten letters with the country of the car's license plate.
